Why I can not serve in Buhari adminitration: Okonjo-Iweala

Click for Full Image Size
Former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has ruled the possibility of her ever serving in the incumbent administration of President Muhammadu Buhar
Okonjo-Iweala, who had served as finance minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan administrations,  said it was better to allow those managing Nigeria's economy to do the best they could.
She spoke while participating in an Aljazeera programme: The Stream,
When asked of her  availability to serve the present administration if overtures were made to her by President Muhammadu Buhari, she said that  Nigeria boasts of competent people, who would offer their services when called upon.
The former minister  said it is regrettable  that the economic gains recorded in Africa have started eroding a few years ago.
In her opinion, the solution must be to address the macroeconomic question, saying that having a firm control over the rate of inflation in addition to ensuring a stable exchange rate should be prioritised by African governments.
According to her, One of the things you learn as you get wiser is to talk less as you grow older. I have spent my time contributing to the country. It will be better to live those managing the economy to do what they know how to do. There can be solutions. Ex Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala “I am not a typical politician.
“I went in as a technocrat. I think on the continent we have seen a period when the economy was doing well, in the last two years we have been experiencing challenges. We  need to focus on the basics which are macro-economics. You must get the fundamentals like having a stable exchange rate and having  inflation under control. “I served my country for seven years and it was a great honour. The second time was very tough but it is still an honour. I am not the only person who is a repository of knowledge. There are other people who can equally try their hands in running the economy.
“I will advise young people not to wait for employment. They should create jobs to employ six people or more. During my time in government, we had a programme called You Win designed to support young entrepreneurs. The whole idea was to have a business plan competition.
“The idea was that they should create jobs. And each, created 9-10 jobs. The World Bank did an evaluation of it and found it good. I do believe that the government should come in. We started a peer to peer mentoring. Now, one of the things I want to say is that creating employment is not only about struggles, it is about managing success.”
On how how corruption was tackled at her time in government, she said: “It was a very tough fight, I must thank my team, you don't do it alone, I had the support of an economic team in the Ministry of Finance. It was tough because at the end of the day you need to have some principles.”

Patience Jonathan: Reps caution EFCC, others against rumours, media trial

Members of the House of Representatives on Monday advised security agencies to conclude investigations before smearing the image of Nigerians in the media.
Two members of the House who spoke against the background that the sum of $31.4m was found in a Skye bank account belonging to former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, advised government security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to carry out a proper investigation before crucifying her.
Minority Leader of the House, Leo Ogor in his reaction described the allegation as a mere rumour until there are concrete evidence to convince Nigerians.
He said 'I will liken this situation to that of budget padding that had no substance in all ramifications'.
'We should allow the security agencies conclude all their findings before crucifying Nigerians in the press'.
'Although I've not seen any of the documents that is being paraded but for now we should allow those working on it conclude their investigations first'.
Speaking in the same vein, Rep Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, PDP, Edo said 'it's still a rumour though I've not seen the details but as you know she is still innocent until proven otherwise in our law courts.' - Vanguard.

Nigeria’s Economy Needs New Strategy – Bola Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that economic re-strategising and re-planning are necessary to achieve sustainable prosperity in Nigeria.
He did not give details.
Tinubu told newsmen after Eid prayers at Dodan Barracks praying ground in Lagos on Monday that lack of solid foundation contributed to the nation’s current economic situation.
“Without a good and solid foundation, we cannot achieve a sustainable economic prosperity. We depended solely on one channel of revenue.
“So, we need to re-trategise and re-plan, but that planning period is always a very difficult period in any family, organisation and nation. “That is what we are experiencing now, but it is for a better and stronger future.
“The political and economic stability we are enjoying in Lagos today is as a result of a solid foundation,’’ he said.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome tells women ~ “Your husband is your master, not your equal”

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, Founder of Christ Embassy church who reportedly had marital issues sometime ago spoke recently on a topic that has been causing heated debates-‘Who Is A Husband And What Is His Role?’
“Husband does not mean the male partner in a marriage, husband means master. The reason for most problems in Christian marriages is the fact that women refute God’s definition of marriage and form theirs. They believe they are equal partners. If most women had their fathers bold enough to talk to them, they will be very successful in their marriage and they will be very happy people. Most women have never been taught by their parents, their fathers particularly and that’s their biggest problem because they don’t know who a man is, they think he is another woman.”

Hillary Clinton tags Trump supporters as ‘basket of deplorables’

The Democratic nominee for president was speaking at a fundraiser in New York on Friday night when she said, “to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.”
“The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”
Speaking to gay rights supporters, she added that those people are “irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.”
Trump struck back on Saturday, posting on Twitter: “Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people. I think it will cost her at the Polls!”
Basket of Deplorables” quickly became a trending hashtag on Twitter on Saturday. There was even a mock account @TheDeplorables.
Clinton also told the crowd at the “LGBT for Hillary” gala that other Trump supporters are people who feel let down by the government and the economy, and are “desperate for change.”
“Those are people we have to understand and empathise with as well,” she said.

Amancio Ortega Overtakes Bill Gates As The Richest Man In The World

Amancio Ortega, the Spanish retail genius who started Zara, passed Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates to become the richest man in the world on Wednesday. Shares of Ortega’s business Inditex, parent company to Zara, Massimo Dutti and Pull&Bear, ticked up 2.5% Wednesday, boosting his personal fortune by $1.7 billion. That lifted Ortega’s net worth from $77.8 billion to $79.5 billion. Gates is worth an estimated $78.5 billion.
The son of a railway worker from La Coruña, Spain, Ortega is as reclusive as he is rich. He started his career as a store clerk in his hometown before opening his own business. Beginning with less than $100, he and his wife Rosalia Mera began making lingerie, pajamas and nightgowns in their living room.
In 1975, the couple (who eventually divorced) decided to open a store named Zara. Eight years later, Ortega had expanded to nine locations around Spain. In 1984, he opened a 10,000 square foot logistics hub.
Unlike most retailers, Inditex hardly relies on advertising. Ortega has instead devoted most of his resources into turning his company into the most efficient retailing operation in the world. When companies like Gap and H&M were taking five months to design, make, distribute and sell new products in the early 2000s, Zara was doing it in three weeks. That meant Ortega’s companies could keep up with the whims of shoppers much more easily than its competitors — and also had to spend less on warehousing.
Ortega took the business public in 2001 and debuted on the Forbes billionaires list the same year, with a net worth of $6.6 billion. By then, Gates was already the richest man in the world, with a fortune of $58.7 billion.
From 2001 to 2002, as most billionaires struggled to hold onto their riches amid the dot-com crash, Ortega gained an additional $2.5 billion and became the world’s 25th-richest man. He repeated the trick seven years later, when the world plunged into crisis. From 2009 to 2013, while the Spanish economy was reeling, Ortega personally gained $39 billion.
Ortega briefly took the title of world’s richest man for the first time in October 2015, when Inditex shares hit an all-time high and boosted Ortega’s net worth to $80 billion. But the stock quickly dipped, and Gates once again claimed the throne. The two billionaires will likely continue to exchange the title as the stock prices of their holdings continue to bounce up and down.
Gates has donated nearly $31 billion in stock and cash to his foundation over his lifetime. If the Microsoft cofounder were not such a prolific philanthropist, neither Ortega nor anyone else on Earth would be anywhere close to as rich as Gates.

EFCC Traces Fresh $5m In Patience Jonathan’s Account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has traced an additional $5m to the Skye Bank account of Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
This brings to $20m the total amount so far traced to the former first lady.
As part of investigations into a money laundering case against a former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to ex-President Jonathan, Waripamowei Dudafa, the EFCC had traced four company accounts to him with a balance of $15m.
The EFCC subsequently charged Dudafa and the four companies with money laundering.
The four companies, whose accounts have since been frozen, are Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Globus Integrated Service Limited.
A source at the EFCC said, “While we were investigating Dudafa, we traced the four companies to him. The companies have domiciliary accounts at Skye Bank with a balance of about $15m. So, we obtained a court order and froze the accounts.
“We then traced the directors of the companies who then denied ownership of the accounts. It was later that we were informed that the accounts belonged to Patience Jonathan and that she is the sole signatory to the accounts. She was given a special card which she used in making withdrawals across the world.
“We, therefore, wondered why the accounts were not opened in her name if she had nothing to hide. In fact, we later found out that her personal account, which bears her name, has a balance of $5m. One wonders where a person, who has never held a government position, got the money from. She was not our initial target but she certainly has questions to answer.”
Jonathan’s wife has, however, sued Skye Bank for freezing her bank accounts and giving the EFCC vital information about her finances.
Patience filed a N200m fundamental rights enforcement suit against Skye Bank Plc.
One Sammie Somiari, who deposed to an affidavit on behalf of Patience, claimed that the EFCC placed a No Debit Order on the four accounts in July, in the course of probing Dudafa.
The EFCC has now filed an amended 17 counts against Dudafa and seven others, including the four companies, wherein the suspects were accused of conspiring to conceal $15,591,700, which the EFCC claimed they ought to have known formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act.
Somiari said in the affidavit filed on behalf of Patience, who is said to be away for an urgent medical treatment abroad, that it was Dudafa who helped Patience open the four bank accounts which the EFCC froze.
In her fundamental rights suit, Patience is urging the court to compel the EFCC to immediately remove the No Debit Order placed on her accounts.
She also wants the court to order Skye Bank to pay her damages in the sum of N200m for what she termed a violation of her right to own personal property under Section 44 of the Constitution.
However, the EFCC is in moves to arraign Dudafa and his alleged accomplices for money laundering before a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Further proceedings in the case has been adjourned until September 15.

CBN Tells Nigerians, Recession Will End When You Buy ‘Made In Nigeria Goods’

The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, has said that the end of the economic recession is not in near sight as it is not an ‘100-meter race’ so Nigerians should be ready for a long haul.
This was disclosed by the acting Director of Corporate Communications of the apex bank, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, while speaking at the ongoing CBN Fair in Enugu. This is in contrast to the assertions made by the government and the ruling party that the economic recession will end sooner than expected.
Okarafor said that the only way out of the recession was for Nigerians to patronize made in Nigeria goods instead of spending foreign currencies. “The most hit now are people who have refused to realize that we ought to eat what we produce, like the elite. Farmers eat what they produce.” Daily Post quotes Okarafor as saying.
Nigeria officially entered a recession after the National Bureau of Statistics confirmed that second quarter GDP contracted by -2% following the -0.3% recorded in the first quarter of 2016.
The recession is often seen as being triggered by the over 100% crash of the Naira at the parallel market in the last one year, increasing the prices of goods and services across the country.
The Nigerian Economy has been hit severely by a drop in oil prices which began in June 2014. Oil being Nigeria’s major export earner, took a major nosedive reducing the amount of dollars available for the country to meet its import needs.
As Nigerians grappled with dwindling export proceeds, the CBN issued a rash of polices that have mostly backfired and contributed significantly to the crash of the Nigeria. CBN’s policies are thought to have exacerbated the current economic situation in the country, alienating foreign investors and worsening a currency crisis that has made the Naira nearly worthless.
The latest comment by Mr Okorafor joins a litany of economic gaffes that the CBN has often been criticized for.

Mikel Finally Opens Up, I Spent £30,000 On Players At Rio

Super Eagles Captain and Chelsea Midfielder, John Mikel bi has revealed he paid money to save dream team at the Rio Olympics in a new interview with Goal.com. This comes after Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung debunked rumours of any payment by the player.
“I think if we talk about the money that I put into the team I think it was more than [£30,000],” Mikel told Goal. “But we just had to do it.
“I said to myself, ‘I won’t let this happen. If I can help, I’ll try to help’. Sometimes there was no food, sometimes there was no pitch to train on, there was no bus to go to the training ground. So all of this was what me and the coach had to figure out, and get money together.
“I came to the camp. I sat down with the boys in Atlanta and I could see the frustration, the pain and the anger. Their aim was to play in the Olympics, their goal was to play in the Olympics. And for me being there and seeing what they are going through, they are young boys, they want to start their career and someone in the ministry is trying to crush that dream,” he said

Militants threaten to burn 500 tankers over bad road

Members of the Black Mambas militant group have threatened to set ablaze over 500 tankers if nothing was done by the Federal Government, by today, to alleviate the suffering of commuters on the Calabar-Ikom Road.
Leader of the group and coordinator of the Niger Delta People Volunteer Front (NDPVF), Asu Simeon Mbi (also known as General Simba) said his men were determined to execute the operation, if nothing urgent was done to alleviate the suffering of transporters and other road users.
Mbi, in a statement, yesterday, vowed that, if nothing was done at the expiration of the ultimatum, Federal Government would count losses.
“I will set fire on those tankers queuing along Calabar-Ikom Highway because of one bad spot the government cannot fill. No matter the security in place, we will execute it. Just watch and see. Then, the federal government should get ready to count losses again,” Mbi declared.
The group also warned Biafrans and other communities around the vicinity to relocate by October 16 “for their own good.”
Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has, once again, intervened on the failed portions of the Calabar-Ikom highway, after a successful emergency repairs of the Calabar-Itu-Ikot-Ekpene-Aba federal highway.
The acting Managing Director, Ibim Semenitari said an urgent intervention was necessary to alleviate the problems facing commuters and transporters on the road.
She said despite funding constraints, the commission was ready to take up the challenge of providing relief for those using the road and stated that NDDC’s engineers would commence rehabilitation work immediately.

That awkward moment when a local government chairman couldn't recite the National Anthem in Ebonyi

There was a mild drama yesterday at the Ebonyi State House of Assembly during the screening of chairmanship nominees by members of the House for their reappointment by Governor Dave Umahi, when a Caretaker Committee Chairman, Chief Henry Eze failed to recite the national anthem and national pledge seven times.
Eze had appeared before the House for the screening when he was asked to recite the national pledge which he could not do properly.
He was also asked to recite the national anthem which he also failed.
Eze, who was the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ishielu local government, was also asked by the Speaker of the Assembly,
Hon Ogbonna Nwifuru, who presided over the sitting, to repeat the national pledge and anthem which he also failed, prompting Nwifuru to present a copy of the written anthem and pledge to enable him recite it properly.
But there was another mild drama when he could not recite the national anthem and national pledge with the written copy.
NewTelegraph reports that annoyed, the Speaker asked him to go back and study the National Anthem and National Pledge, describing it as embarrassment.
“How can a council chairman not recite National Anthem and National Pledge?
This House is surprised that as a council chairman, you cannot recite the anthem and pledge when you should be the one to teach your subordinates the anthem. So, go back and study them,” he told Eze.
Despite his inability to recite the National Anthem and National Pledge, Eze was screened and confirmed by the House.
Meanwhile, the House screened and confirmed eleven chairmanship nominees in the state.
Their screening and confirmation followed the expiration of their tenure in office and their reappointment by Governor Dave Umahi. Twelve out of the 13 Caretaker Committee Chairmen were reappointed.

Men at greater risk of heart attack when they enjoy sex at older age

A new study has revealed  that having sex well into old age is not totally beneficial to all. It found that having regular sex – and enjoying it – puts older men at higher risk for heart attacks and other heart-related problems. Contrary to the claim, older women can actually lower their risk of hypertension by having good sex.
Dr. Hui Liu, a lead researcher and an associate professor of sociology at Michigan State University, said: “These findings challenge the widely held assumption that sex brings uniform health benefits to everyone.”
Using data related to 2,204 people aged between 57 and 85, in the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project in the US collected in 2005-06, a similar data was repeated five years later.
The study shows older men who had sex once a week or more were much more likely to suffer a cardiovascular event five years later, when compared with older men who were sexually inactive. The same risk was not found for women, the researchers noted.
Dr Liu further said: “Strikingly, we find that having sex once a week or more puts older men at a risk for experiencing cardiovascular events that is almost two times greater than older men who are sexually inactive.
“Moreover, older men who found sex with their partner extremely pleasurable or satisfying had a higher risk of cardiovascular events than men who did not feel so. Because older men have more difficulties reaching orgasm for medical or emotional reasons than do their younger counterparts, they may exert themselves to a greater degree of exhaustion and create more stress on their cardiovascular system in order to achieve climax.
“However, only women in good quality relationships may acquire such benefits from their partner.”

The Federal Government has empowered over 35,000 graduates in different skills through its Graduate Internship Scheme.
The Project Director of GIS, Mr. Dennis   Chukwu, disclosed this in Abeokuta on Monday during an orientation programme organised for interns, in partnership with government and non-governmental organisations.
Chukwu, who was represented by Eronwu Chiemela, also said many of the beneficiaries had secured jobs while some others had started their own businesses.
He said, 'I am happy to disclose that over 35,000 graduates have exited the scheme, with thousands of them securing jobs and many starting their own businesses thorough credit facilities, cooperative associations,  grants especially YouWin!'
He said the programme was aimed at tackling unemployment among graduates, by entering into special partnerships with government and non-governmental organisations to have graduates trained, mentored and supported in non-oil sectors.
Chukwu, who disclosed that no fewer than 41,161, with 68 per cent males, 31 per cent females and 1 per cent vulnerable, had benefitted from the scheme since inception.
He explained that the essence of the orientation programme with the theme: 'Orientation and Employability Skills Training for Interns and Firm Representatives in Ogun State', is part of government's commitment to beefing up interns' capacity in service effectiveness.
He said, 'This is part of government's contributions towards the enhancement of their capacity in service effectiveness, especially through staff assessment, official etiquette and staff management/development through structured mentorship.
'It also provides an opportunity to share ideas with other partners and interns on workplace ethics, performance and how to optimise the benefits of the scheme.'
He added that the special synergy between GIS and government as well as non-governmental organisations, would have graduates trained, mentored and supported in non-oil export trades.

INEC Shifts Edo Governor Polls To Sept. 28 Over Security Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, last night, yielded to security advice and postponed the Edo State election to Wednesday, September 28, 2016.
The polls was initial scheduled to hold tomorrow September 10, 2016. INEC National Commissioner for Voters Education and Publicity, Mr Solomon Atoyebi at a news briefing in Benin, the Edo State capital at 8pm last night said the reason for the postponement was security concerns.
Mr. Atoyebi had at an earlier briefing, yesterday afternoon, brushed aside the security advice from the police and the Department of State Services, DSS, to postpone the polls on the basis of alleged security threats directed against some states of the federation, Edo inclusive, because the electoral commission was 97 per cent prepared to conduct the exercise.
The postponement elicited immediate response from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which rejected the move and Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, who said the development was a bad signal for Nigeria’s democracy.

PDP insist Edo governorship election must hold on Saturday September 10th

PDP says it is not in support of INEC’s decision to postpone the Edo state governorship election slated for this Saturday. ‎Read the party’s statement below…
Sequel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s Decision this afternoon to go ahead with the Edo State Gubernatorial Election as scheduled; and their immediate reversal of that patriotic stance, the Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, CON, has re-iterated its earlier position that the Saturday September 10, 2016 Election Date should remain sacrosanct since there is no tangible reason(s) evident to tamper with the Election.
The call for the postponement of the Election by top hierarchy of the security agencies predicated on alleged security threat was a less than ingenious attempt to buy time for the APC which is clearly heading for a major electoral catastrophe on Saturday.
“It is shameful and indeed a major constitutional breach for the security agencies to act in concert with the APC to truncate an Election that had been planned for months. Nigerians were not deceived by the obvious concoctions of the security agencies whose performances during elections have been less than average since the advent of the Buhari Administration. Indeed they have become instruments in the hands of the Ruling Party to harass, intimidate and punish opponents.” Prince Adeyeye declared.
The time may be ripe now for President Buhari and the National Assembly to conduct a non-partisan holistic review and investigation of the national security apparatus to save our fledging democracy.
'The postponement of the Election by INEC is illegal, unconstitutional and a breach of the peoples’ trust in the Commission and the security agencies. It is a coup against the people of Edo State in particular and Nigerians in general. Since APC assumed power, virtually all elections conducted by INEC have either been inconclusive or truncated. Saturday’s Election in Edo State must be an exemption. We will not accept anything less than free, fair and transparent election conducted and concluded the same day. INEC must rise to the occasion to restore the confidence of Nigerians in its operations. Edo is a test case. With the way INEC is performing, how are we sure that it would be able to handle the 2019 national elections. Our democracy is under a serious threat from the APC and its Gestapo security agencies.”
Finally, we call on all stakeholders – The Media, civil society organizations, all political parties and indeed all Nigerians and the international community to rise to defend our hard earned democracy from the assault being unleashed on it by the APC Government.

Signed:

Prince Dayo Adeyeye

PDP National Publicity Secretary

I am as good as Messi and Ronaldo – Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez believes he is good enough to be considered in the same bracket as superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sanchez was a team-mate of Messi’s at Barcelona, but departed Camp Nou for the Premier League ahead of the 2014-2015 season in search of regular starts.
The Chile forward has become a firm fan favourite at Emirates Stadium after scoring 30 goals in 68 league appearances for the Gunners.
Messi and Real Madrid rival Ronaldo are widely considered as the best two players on the planet and have held a monopoly over the Ballon d’Or award for the past eight years.
But Sanchez is confident that he can be considered on their level.
“I have reached a level where I can compete with great players,” he said.
“I do not feel inferior to anybody.
“I liken [my qualities] to Messi and Ronaldo. I have the same abilities as them.”
Alexis won LaLiga and Copa del Rey medals with Barca and also has an FA Cup triumph to his name with Arsenal.

London Evening Standard Reports $1.3 Billion Corruption Deal Involving Ex-Petroleum Minister Dan Etete

UK newspaper – London Evening Standard has reported on a gloomy deal involving former Nigerian pepetroleum minister, Dan Etete.
Here’s what the report says:
“Even by Nigerian standards, the alleged siphoning off of $1 billion (£750 million) from a $1.3 billion international investment in a lucrative oil block through “fees” to a former oil minister’s company and assorted middlemen has been shocking.
Jonathan Fisher QC called it “grand corruption”. High Court Judge Mr Justice Edis declared: “Given the large sums of money involved that are effectively paid to a former minister to a bank account in the Middle East, the whole exercise is backed by murky instructions.”
The saga of OPL245 — a huge Nigerian oilfield containing an estimated nine billion barrels of crude — began in 1998 when the then petroleum minister, Dan Etete, awarded the licence to Malabu Oil & Gas, a Nigerian company with no assets and no employees, for $20 million, seemingly a tiny fraction of its real value.
Over the next decade, there were a number of legal wranglings between Shell and Malabu over ownership of the field.
Eventually, in 2011, the field was sold by the Nigerian government to Eni and Shell.
The two oil giants paid the government but $1.09 billion was subsequently sent to Malabu.
Shell and Eni insist they did not know this would happen. The arrangement — memorably described by a middlemen as a “safe-sex transaction” — was controversial enough.
But then it was claimed in High Court proceedings that the beneficial owner of Malabu was none other than Etete, the former oil minister who awarded the oil block to Malabu in the first place. Etete denied this, saying he was just a consultant.
So, the Nigerian state only retained $208 million — the signature bonus paid by Shell.
The remaining $1 billion-plus was channelled to bank accounts in London, Switzerland and offshore locations allegedly controlled by Malabu, Etete and five other Nigerian companies whose beneficial owners were not known.
Anti-corruption campaigner Global Witness’s Barnaby Pace says: “The $1 billion that went missing was equivalent to 80% of Nigeria’s health budget but the money did not benefit the country’s citizens. The deal proves how critical it is that the public can find out who the real owners of companies are so that criminals cannot disguise their identities.” ENI and Shell deny wrongdoing.
The case also highlights the dangers faced by oil corporations operating in Nigeria.
For Shell, the OPL 245 block is crucial because it could replenish its proven global oil reserves by a third. It is adamant it only paid the government and not Malabu or Etete. But investigations into the OPL245 affair continue in the UK, Italy and Nigeria.
“Shell is co-operating with the authorities and is looking into the allegations, which it takes seriously”, the company said. “Shell attaches the greatest importance to business integrity.”
For Italy’s ENI, the saga has taken a far more bizarre twist. According to reports in the Italian press, extraordinary allegations have now been circulating that ENI chief executive Claudio Descalzi and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi are linked to Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency.
Other claims have also been circulated in what Italian prosecutors regard as a conspiracy to topple the two men, with Renzi being targeted because of his support for Descalzi.
The reports claim prominent Nigerians who lost out in the OPL 245 sale are involved in the plot. They allegedly include former ministers, an attorney general and members of former Nigerian president Sani Abacha’s family.
In Nigeria, the OPL245 affair is a major challenge for President Muhammadu Buhari, who was elected last year on an anti-corruption ticket. “We shall strongly battle another form of evil that is even worse than terrorism — the evil of corruption”, he declared.
His track record so far is unimpressive. His Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) is said to be under-resourced and incompetent.
Multiple case files have been opened but are often incomplete or missing, it is claimed.
Sources say this is frustrating for investigators at Britain’s National Crime Agency, who are trying to probe the alleged laundering of OPL245 money through London banks and properties.
Last week, the two governments agreed criminal assets stolen in Nigeria and seized in Britain can be returned to the West African country, but such breakthroughs are rare.
Buhari’s governing style is also a source of frustration. Critics say he is slow in his decision-making, which allows the EFCC to wallow in indecision.
In the OPL245 case, a legal dispute over $85 million frozen in a NatWest bank account in London belonging to Etete is meandering through the UK courts, yet the Nigerian government has not even sent a proceeds-of-crime submission to the judge. The funds remain frozen and the case languishes.
Buhari’s critics say his approach means that much-needed funds from corruption cases are not bringing in revenue for an ailing economy ravaged by low oil prices, and the oil blocks themselves are not being developed.
Meanwhile, as the scandal drags on, other western firms can be forgiven for shying away from investing in Buhari’s Nigeria.
Fayose condemns postponement of Edo guber election, says “democracy now in danger under APC”
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has condemned the call for the postponement of the Edo State governorship election by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police, saying 'It is obvious that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is challenged and afraid of losing the election and the party is using the federal government security agencies to cause a postponement of the election so as to be able to perfect its new rigging plans.'
The governor, who raised the alarm that 'democracy is in danger' under the APC government, said; 'obviously, within two years of APC government, Nigeria is in both economic and political recession and this should worry all true lovers of the country.'
Reacting to the DSS and Police position that the election be postponed because of security threat, Governor Fayose, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said he was worried that 'democracy in Nigeria has now graduated from inconclusive elections to postponement of elections in other to return APC candidates at all cost.'
He said; 'Within two year, the APC government not only destroyed the economy of Nigeria, it has destroyed the legacy of free, fair and credible electoral process bequeathed on the country by the PDP.'
The governor said; 'The questions Nigerians must ask the APC-led federal government are; what security threat can overcome over 50,000 security personnel in an election holding in just one out of the 36 States in Nigeria? If election must be postponed in just one State because of security threat, what will then happen in 2019 when elections will be conducted in the entire country?
'Another question is; were they unaware of the security challenge when President Mohammadu Buhari went to Edo State to campaign for the APC yesterday?
'No doubt, this is a game being played by the APC because it has become so imminent that the party cannot win the election if it is held on Saturday as scheduled.
'The postponement is obviously meant to give room for the APC to perfect a new rigging strategy and lovers of democracy in Nigeria should begin to see how the APC aims at perpetuating itself in power beyond 2019 even now that the party has been rejected by Nigerians.'

Edo 2016: Maintain the Standard Set by Jonathan, Ekweremadu Tells APC Govt

Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has called on the APC-led federal and state governments of Edo state to ensure that the upcoming governorship elections in the state are peaceful.
According to him, the APC government should “maintain the electoral standard set by the PDP” and “call its security operatives to order.”
Accusing the Nigeria Police of “unwarranted arrests and harassment” of its members and supporters, the Deputy President of the Senate urged the Federal Government to ensure a free, fair and credible electoral process.

PDP crisis: Hands-off our dispute – Markafi, others tell Justice Abang

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, fixed September 29 to decide whether or not he should hands-off the legal tussle between two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff.
The judge had on August 15, issued an order of interlocutory injunction that barred the party from conducting its national convention.
The order, which came barely 48 hours to a convention the party scheduled to take place in Port Harcourt on August 17, equally stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from monitoring the exercise.
He said the party must not sponsor any candidate or conduct election into any of its national offices, pending the determination of a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/464/2016, which Sheriff and seven others lodged before the court.
Meanwhile, at the resumed hearing on the matter on Wednesday, Markafi and six other members of the party, through their lawyer, Mr. Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, challenged the jurisdiction of Justice Abang to further preside over the matter.
They asked Justice Abang to hands-off the suit and await judgment of the Court of Appeal on three separate appeals that were entered against his previous decisions on the PDP leadership crisis.
Ukala who notified the court that the appeals were filed on July 28, August 15 and 16, respectively, said there was need for Justice Abang to 'step aside' from the case.
'Once an appeal has been entered, the court bellow ought to stand aside and allow the Court of Appeal to have the opportunity to exercise its jurisdiction on the matter', Ukala submitted.
However, counsel to the plaintiffs, Chief Niyi Akintola, SAN, urged the court to ignore the appellants and go ahead with the substantive suit.
Akintola noted that there was nothing stopping the simultaneous hearing of the three appeals and the suit before the high court.
After listening to both sides, Justice Abang adjourned to rule on the issue.
Aside Sheriff, others listed as plaintiffs in the suit were Prof. Wale Oladapo (National Secretary); Dennis Alonge-Niyi (Deputy National Youth Leader); Alhaji Bashir Maidugu (Deputy National Legal Adviser); Mrs. Hanatu Ulam (Deputy National Women Leader); Alhaji Lawal Dutsima Anchi (Deputy National Auditor); Chief Okey Nnadozie (Deputy National Organising Secretary) and Chief Olisa Metuh (National Publicity Secretary).
The plaintiffs said they filed the suit for themselves and on behalf of the Executive Committee/National Working Committee of the PDP.
Though only PDP and INEC were initially cited as defendants in the case, the court subsequently joined Makarfi and six others as defendants in the suit.
Those also allowed into the matter as 4th to 9th defendants were Senator Ben Obi, Odion Ugbesia, Abdul Ningi, Kabiru Usman, Dayo Adeyeye and Aisha Aliyu.
